POS detection: know what they run before you call

LocalProspect Pro reads a business's own website for payment and point-of-sale signals, then tells you how confident it is. Here is what it looks for, where it stops, and how to use the result on a call.

What it looks for

For each lead with a website, the check scans the public page code for signs of seven POS platforms: Square, Toast, Clover, Lightspeed, TouchBistro, Heartland and Shopify POS. It also notes payment processors embedded on the site (Stripe, PayPal, Venmo and Cash App), online-ordering platforms (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, ChowNow, Toast online ordering, Olo and Slice), and mentions of tap to pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If the site says cash only and shows no payment signals, that is recorded too.

How confident it is

Every result carries a confidence level and the evidence behind it. Two or more signals in the site's code count as high confidence, and one signal as medium. A detection is a lead, not proof: a website can embed one vendor's checkout button while the counter runs another system, and a Shopify-powered site doesn't always mean Shopify POS. Confirm it on the call.

When the website says nothing

If the site gives no signal, you can run the AI check instead. It looks at the business's website, job postings and public mentions, reports which source it used, and can return unknown when the public record is thin. That check costs one credit. The website check costs none, and searching is always free.

Why it matters for the pitch

Knowing the system changes what you ask. Each detected platform gets a contract hint (likely locked in, month-to-month or unknown) and, for most, a prompt to ask when they got their current system. Those hints are general rules of thumb, not contract data, so confirm the actual terms with the merchant. For food businesses with no online ordering, the lead is also flagged as an online-ordering gap, a natural opening for a conversation about their whole payment setup.

The POS name and any review pain points then feed the sales script and the merchant pitch, so your opener can refer to what they actually run.

Use it with the rest of the lead

POS detection sits beside the website audit, review analysis, phone line type and email discovery on the same lead. When a merchant hands you a statement, statement analysis turns it into a pricing model, a savings number and a script. If you only have rough figures, the effective rate calculator gets you a starting number without an account.
